Teaching
The projects shown here include graduate urban design studios at UC Berkeley for the Master of Urban Design MUD program including joint studios in 2017, 2018 with Cambridge University for a major transit-oriented, mixed-use brownfield site at Old Oak Common in West London, followed in 2021 by a studio for the expansion of Thamesmead on the Thames Gateway in London.
Other studios have focused on Bay Area brownfield sites that address many of the challenges of our times including sea level rise, transit-oriented development and high density housing. Sites include the Coliseum in Oakland, Alameda Point, the Central Waterfront and Baylands in San Francisco.
In all case the students from a range of disciplines are required to work in teams to prepare detailed plans, street and block patterns, and building typlogies, and if joined by students from the Master of Real Estate Development and Design MRED+D to prepare economic proformas.
I have been fortunate to work alongside teachers including Peter Bosselmann, Harrison Fraker, Elizabeth Macdonald, Greg Morrow and Chris Calott at UC Berkeley, and Ying Jin and Marcial Echenique at Cambridge.
