Broadway Family Housing, San Francisco CA
Designed as Solomon ETC, 2001
John Ellis Concept Designer with Daniel Solomon, Anne Torney, Malcolm Harris, Alan Christ
Broadway Family Housing was built on the site of the former Embarcadero Freeway touchdown following its demolition after the 1989 Earthquake. The design consists of three buildings separated by two courtyards. The brick clad eight-story midrise building on the corner of Broadway and Battery Street matches the height and materials of an office building opposite. Its architecture recalls the scale and massing of the brick warehouses that served the waterfront.
The ground floor has a childcare facility and a community room for the residents.
