Fine Arts Building, Berkeley CA
Designed as WRT/Solomon E.T.C. 2005
John Ellis Project Designer with Daniel Solomon
The Fine Arts Building on Shattuck Avenue in Downtown Berkeley provides 103 micro apartments for students, ground floor retail and the shell for a future movie theatre. The Art Deco style recalls the prevailing architecture of Downtown Berkeley with its flamboyant movie theatres and the Berkeley Public Library.
Parking lifts are used in the garage avoiding the expense of a basement and taking advantage of the extra height for the ground floor.
The apartments are arranged around an upper level courtyard. Their compact plans with nested second bedrooms create an articulated street facade, embellished with clip-on sun shading elements.
