Modern Art Museum, Oxford England
Designed as John Ellis Architect, 1972 for Nicholas Serota
Later remodelled by dRMM architects, 2015
Nicholas Serota and John Ellis were both students at Cambridge and when Nick was appointed Director of the Modern Art Museum in Oxford in 1972 he invited John to help remodel the existing former warehouse building on Pembroke Street. This involved new lighting in the main upstairs gallery and improvements to the entry lobby and downstairs cafe and bookshop. An early project that helped launch Nick’s career to the Whitechapel Gallery and eventually the Tate.
The building has undergone numerous renovations over the years including work by David Owers and most recently an extensive remodel by dRMM in 2015.
