New York Times, Times Square Building Competition, New York City NY

Designed as John G. Ellis Architect, 1986

An ideas competition for the treatment of the historic New York Times building on Times Square, New York. The design proposed celebrating the building’s strategic location by adding a glazed elevator shaft leading to an upper level platform and rooftop chamber. The new tower is capped with the silver bowl that descends at midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Advertisements adorn the tower in a manner inspired by Gunnar Asplund’s 1930 Stockholm World’s Fair pavilion.
