Oakwood Housing, Warrington, England

Designed as MacCormac, Jamieson Prichard Architects, 1977

John Ellis Project Designer with Richard MacCormac

Oakwood is a district within Warrington New Town and the site for a range of new social housing projects. This project is made up of terrace houses along narrow lanes and a series of larger scaled stacked dwellings that line the main road to the north. The lanes lead to a triangular shaped public open space while the larger buildings are arranged around a series of courts.

The architectural language reflects the Arts and Crafts tradition with half-timber construction and brickwork in the manner of early 20th century architects such as Bailie Scott and Raymond Unwin.

The project started as social housing and is now largely owner occupied as a response to the Thatcher government Right-to-Buy programme.
