UC Berkeley Old Oak Common Studios 2017, 2018
UC Berkeley Master of Urban Design studio with Cambridge University students.
John Ellis with Peter Bosselmann, Harrison Fraker, and Ying Jin from Cambridge University Department of Architecture.
Invited critics included Sjoerd Soeters from Amsterdam, Doug Kelbaugh, Jonathan Rose from AECOM, John Sergeant, Jo van Heyningen, Peter Buchanan, and faculty from both Cambridge University and UC Berkeley.
The Old Oak Common studio was an opportunity to take the 12 graduate students over to London to participate with Cambridge University students on the master planning for a major development plan. Old Oak Common will have a major transit hub for both HS2 from London to Brirmingham, and Crossrail and the Great Western Railway main line. A brownfield site it is the location for an ambitious plan for housing and employment. Jonathan Rose of AECOM London provided the programme for the site and generously orchestrated a review with a distinguished group of jurors at the end of the London visit.
The students worked in teams to balance their skills as planners, architects, landscape and urban designers. They coordinated with the Cambridge students over the week-long visit to London during the Spring Break.
