The Far Roc Ideas Competition was sponsored by the New York Center for Architecture following Super Storm Sandy in 2012 to explore ideas for creating resilient communities along Rockaway’s vulnerable shoreline. The project proposed sustainable and resiliency strategies to address storm surges from the Atlantic and back flow flooding from Jamaica Bay. Dune restoration and green creek corridors were proposed. The plan consisted of a mixed-use neighborhood with a range of residential building types. New community facilities are proposed next to the elevated Subway Station.
