Harbor Bay Isle masterplan, Alameda CA

Designed as KMD Architects with Barbara Stauffacher Solomon, landscape design

John Ellis Urban Designer with Jeff Heller, Ed McFarlan

An invited competition entry to create a masterplan for a mile long site overlooking the Bay on Alameda Island. The design proposed a grand boulevard leading to a new ferry terminal serving San Francisco. The plan proposed a street and block pattern to accommodate a range of land-uses including offices and a residential neighborhood focused on the ferry terminal. A new light rail line was proposed along the boulevard connecting back to the Fruitvale BART station. Landscaping with fast growing poplar trees would give the boulevard a strong initial identity and a formal quality while development took shape over time.
