I-280 Freeway Removal study, Mission Bay,
San Francisco CA
Designed by John Ellis with Mohammad Momin
San Francisco has a long tradition of freeway removal. SPUR organized an ideas competition to explore the potential of removing I-280 from the edge of Mission Bay and replacing it with an on-grade boulevard. The design shows how this could be achieved together with the reuse of the Caltrain rail yards after the rail extension to the Transbay Terminal is built. The result reconnects different neighborhoods, Mission Bay, South of Market and the Design Districts and the potential for several thousand new dwellings and other uses. 7th Street becomes a grand boulevard intersecting with King Street at a giant roundabout that becomes a new gateway into the city.
