Rancho Mirage Civic Center competition,

Rancho Mirage CA

Designed as John Ellis and Anko Chen Architects

Rancho Mirage is a small desert city near Palm Springs and was home to various celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, and President Gerald and Betty Ford. A competition was held to design a new civic centre including a new City Hall, Library and civic offices. The site plan was organized about a circulation spine that bisected the triangular site. One one side is a Palm Court with a ceremonial entry while on the other facing the car park is an entrance through an Undercroft beneath a large Community Room. The plan was set around a circular civic court about which was a cross axis with two wings, one of which contained a cylindrical Council Chamber, the other civic offices.
