Vietnam Memorial competition, Washington DC

Designed as John G Ellis architect, 1984

An entry for the Vietnam Memorial competition proposed a cylindrical rotunda within a partially enclosed walled courtyard. Within the Rotunda would be the manes of the dead, while the floor would have a map of Vietnam with the key locations for many of the events of the war marked.

The walls of the enclosing courtyard would be incomplete sumbolizing the broken lives of the departed.

The architectural language was intended to be in keeping with the classical forms of Washington DC but in an abstracted manner.
